Recollections and family histories are constructs created by our selective memory. Even though memories are often inaccurate, they serve an important role by keeping us connected to the past while tethering us to the present. Ultimately remembrances are revealed to be inherently flawed, and yet they orient us to our own accepted reality. I use appropriated family photos, stories, and genealogies in my work to reference these unstable constructs. I am constantly trying to connect with the past and to uncover my roots and origins; however, the past, which I did not experience firsthand, will always be a mystery. My work struggles to discover the undiscoverable.
